The Abel Visiting Scholar Program invites professional mathematicians from developing countries to spend a month visiting an international research collaborator. For visits lasting more than one month, applicants must provide evidence of financial support from the host institution to cover living expenses after the first month.

The program is intended for post-doctoral mathematicians in the early stages of their professional careers. It is intended to provide the opportunity for a’research sabbatical,’ a necessary supplement to teaching and other academic duties for mathematicians who wish to maintain a viable research program.

The grant can cover for one month and only for the applicant up to 4,400 EUR (5,000 USD):

  • Travel expenses.

  • Basic living costs for the first month (daily allowance based on the visiting country/city’s living costs, which include public transportation and all other living expenses).
  • Accommodation costs in the host country (hotel is permitted if the host certifies that no guesthouse or rented flat is available for a period of no more than four weeks).

Eligibilities for IMU Abel Visiting Scholar Program:

Applicants must:

  • At the time of application, you must hold a PhD in mathematics.
  • Be located in a developing country at the time of application (as defined by the IMU).
  • Work at a university or a research institution.
  • Be in the early stages of their professional careers; more specifically, the applicants should:
    • Not yet a full professorial rank, but with a working contract at a university or college.
    • Be under 35 years old on the day of the application deadline.

Documents Requirement:

  • CV of applicant and host, including a list of recent publications (maximum of three pages each).
  • The research statement for the visit should describe the research project and list the mathematicians with whom the applicant will collaborate. The applicant must have previously initiated research contact with the proposed international research partner(s). Previous collaboration will be viewed positively. The collaboration should take place in the international partner’s home institution.
  • A formal invitation from the institution of the international research partner.
  • Letter of recommendation – If the international research partner (the host) does not write the letter of recommendation, the application should include a statement from the host that the research plan is approved.
  • A copy of the PhD certificate.
  • A statement about the current employment status/position in the home institution, signed and stamped by the employer. The statement should include the duration of employment. Please use this

  • A photo of the applicant for the IMU website.
  • For research visits lasting more than a month, applicants must provide proof of matching funds from the host institution to cover living expenses.
